Collection contains papers relating to Robert Bell's work on the Hudson's Bay Expeditions of 1884 and 1885, his work for the Geological Survey of Canada, and his interest in other matters pertaining to the Arctic. Collection includes a letter from Julien Stewart Camsell about the International Polar Expedition of 1882-1883, a letter from Henry Philip Dawson about the meeting of the International Polar Commission in Vienna, and a letter from William Smith about Bell's medical services in the Hudson's Bay Expeditions of 1884 and 1885. Also includes a letter from Moritz Karl Lindeman, in which Lindeman, on behalf of the Geographische Gesellschaft in Bremen, inquires about sending an expedition to Hudson Bay. Bell's medical notes from the Hudson's Bay Expedition of 1885 and his accounts for expenses incurred during field exploration trips for the Geological Survey of Canada in 1888, 1891-1897, 1901-1903, and 1907 are also included. Other correspondents are William P. Anderson, Andrew Robertson Gordon, Hugh D. Payne, William J. Skinner, and William Wakeman.

The International Polar Expedition was sponsored by the U.S. Signal Corps and the Smithsonian Institution to establish a permanent station for meteorological, magnetic, tidal, and pendulum observation.
